Teacher Ears

I walk around my class or I sit at my desk and I hear so many different things. The usually she did....... or I can't stand him/her. Sometimes I hear other things about other students and sometimes I don't know whethere to make a point to say something (talk to the student, call home, tell an administrator). With high school students telling one of their friends you never know how far the true has stretched. If I hear something that would put that student or another in danger I definitely do something about it but other things. Has anyone else ever come across this stype of subject?

It must be really hard working with older students. I guess I never had the desire to work with high school grades (probably because I had such an AWFUL Senior year). Hearing all of that stuff said by girls/boys in your class must get pretty frustrating. Yea, that is how we were when were that age too-but, now being older and in the actual "teacher's shoes"--we feel a whole lot different! To tell you the truth--with all of the violence that is going on with our youth today--you can NEVER take anything as being a joke anymore--things get way too far and should be taken care of and by whom? Well, by us teachers of course--we are their "Mother hens" too! See you on Friday and good luck with everything!

It is a tricky situation, knowing whether or not to step in and when. Even though I only worked with middle school students, I had the same problems. I very rarely stepped in, because like you said you never really know what is actually tru but a few times I did and I contacted the parents. The students of course were really pissed at me and started changing their stories fast. The most important thing to remember is to trust your instincts. If you feel something should be said say it, yes you might have some mad students but you are only looking out for them and in the end you are not there to be their friend but as you said be their mother hen and look out for their best interest.

I'm always amazed at what students are willing to talk about out loud in front of you. I've overheard things about what students have done sexually with other studetns. I've also heard kids talk about how much they drank on Spring Break. The list goes on. Like you've said, you never really know how much of what they are saying is true. If I were in their shoes I wouldn't talk about private things loud enough for everyone, including my teacher to hear. It just goes to show you that they are still kids no matter how grown up they think they are.
